Why Kibble-Fed Dogs Poop So Much
If you pick up a lot of waste, it's because a lot of the food is waste. Kibble is full of starch fillers, grain, and plant matter that your dog's body isn’t designed to utilize. Most of it passes straight through, which is why kibble-fed dogs have bigger, softer, smellier stool and go more often.
It’s pretty simple—what goes in has to come out. If the food is mostly usable nutrition, there isn’t much left over. If it’s mostly filler, there’s a lot more waste.
What Raw Feeding Actually Does
Raw reduces stool volume through three mechanisms.
Higher bioavailability
Raw meat, organ, and whole-food ingredients are almost entirely absorbable for a dog's digestive system. Your dog is designed to process them. Very little goes to waste.
No starch or grain filler
Kibble needs grain, starch, or legume binders to hold its shape during extrusion. Those ingredients are indigestible bulk. Remove them, and stool volume drops dramatically.
Appropriate calcium and natural fiber
Proper bone content in a balanced raw diet firms up stool naturally. Organ meat adds the right amount of natural fiber. No synthetic fiber supplements required.
What to Expect, and When
Coat changes happen in stages. Here's what most families see.
-
Days 1–7
Transition period
Stool may be inconsistent as the gut adjusts. Some dogs shift quickly, others take a few days.
-
Weeks 2–4
Volume drops
You'll notice smaller, firmer stool first. Some families see stool volume cut in half within a week. Smell drops with it.
-
Ongoing
The new normal
Stool stays small, firm, and relatively odorless as long as the diet stays clean. Loose stool usually signals something changed (improper treats, cheap supplements).
