If you have a dog that has itchy skin, dull coat, stinky breath, farty, burpy or excess shedding it’s past time to stop feeing kibble and feed a species appropriate raw diet! This episode will answer how you can keep your dogs/cats teeth clean without feeding fake food like “Greenies”
Why Kibble-Fed Dogs Get Bad Breath and Plaque
The myth is that kibble "scrapes teeth clean" because it's hard. The reality is almost the opposite. Kibble is mostly starch. Starch coats teeth, sticks in the gumline, and feeds the bacteria that cause plaque, tartar, and periodontal disease.
A 2005 Waltham Centre study found that within three days of switching a dog from raw to kibble, plaque and gingivitis started building. Within a month, the damage was visible. The hardness of kibble does very little against the soft, sticky residue it leaves behind.
What Raw Feeding Actually Does
Raw feeding works on teeth in three ways.
Natural mechanical cleaning
Raw blends don't leave the sticky, starchy residue that can contribute to plaque buildup. And dogs don't chew like we do—they rip, shred, tear, and gulp. Appropriate raw meaty bones help naturally exercise the jaw and provide physical action against the teeth, supporting cleaner teeth and healthier gums.
Enzymatic support
Raw meat contains live enzymes that help break down the film on teeth. Cooked or extruded food does not. Once you cook it, those enzymes are gone.
No starch, no fuel for bacteria
Raw food contains little to no starchy carbohydrates, so it doesn't provide the bacteria fuel that starchy foods can. A raw diet helps support cleaner teeth and healthier gums.
Adding in Raw Meaty Bones 2-3 times a week also helps scrap teeth naturally and gives your pets the additional mental stimulation they need.
What to Expect, and When
Every dog is different, but this is what most families see.
-
Weeks 1–2
Breath starts to shift
As plaque and tartar fad, stinky bacteria decreases leading to fresher breath.
-
Weeks 3–6
Plaque starts to soften
Existing tartar takes longer, but soft plaque starts lifting off. You may see teeth looking whiter at the gumline first.
-
Months 2–6
Whiter teeth, pinker gums
Gums come back to a healthy pink. Deep tartar may still need a professional cleaning, but maintenance becomes almost effortless.
“My pups have been exclusively on Raw Dog Food & Co. for a few months now, and their teeth are white, their coats are beautiful, and they love their food. It brings me joy to spend my money on this company.”
